<\/a>Pierre \u00c9tienne B\u00e9zier<\/b>\u00a0(September 1, 1910 \u2013 November 25, 1999;\u00a0[\u02c8pj\u025b\u0281 e\u02c8tj\u025bn be\u02c8zje]<\/a><\/span>) was a\u00a0French<\/a>\u00a0engineer and one of the founders of the fields of solid, geometric and physical modelling as well as in the field of representing curves, especially in CAD\/CAM systems.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0As an engineer at\u00a0Renault<\/a>, he became a leader in the transformation of design and manufacturing, through mathematics and computing tools, into computer-aided design and three-dimensional modeling.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

B\u00e9zier patented and popularized the\u00a0B\u00e9zier curves<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0B\u00e9zier surfaces<\/a>\u00a0that are now used in most\u00a0computer-aided design<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0computer graphics<\/a>systems.<\/p>\n

B\u00e9zier curve<\/strong> – \u00a0<\/span>B\u00e9zier popularized but did not actually create the\u00a0B\u00e9zier curve<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 using such curves to design\u00a0automobile<\/a>\u00a0bodies. The curves were first developed in 1959 by\u00a0Paul de Casteljau<\/a>\u00a0using\u00a0de Casteljau’s algorithm<\/a>, a\u00a0numerically stable<\/a>\u00a0method to evaluate B\u00e9zier curves. The curves remain widely used in computer graphics to model smooth curves.<\/p>\n

B\u00e9zier developed the notation, consisting of nodes with attached\u00a0control handles<\/a>, with which the curves are represented in computer software. The control handles define the shape of the curve on either side of the common node, and can be manipulated by the user, via the software.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

B\u00e9zier curves were adopted as the standard curve of the\u00a0PostScript<\/a>\u00a0language and subsequently were adopted by vector programs such as\u00a0Adobe Illustrator<\/a>,\u00a0CorelDRAW<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Inkscape<\/a>. Most outline fonts, including\u00a0TrueType<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0PostScript Type 1<\/a>, are defined with B\u00e9zier curves.<\/p>\n
